Abhyanga Procedure:
A hot shower is necessary just before commencing the massage as it is helps to soften and loosen the toxins, in preparation for the massage.
Specially prepared Dosha oil for the individual is warmed and then applied to the body. This warm oil will allow for better absorption into the skin, thereby allowing the blood to carry the oil and herbs throughout the body to promote detoxification. The massage strokes and techniques generate heat and also help in the process of absorption.
Clients will undergo one complete hour of oil massage followed by a steam bath for a period of around 10-15 minutes (time will be determined by Dosha). It is important to drink a glass of water to replenish fluids lost during the massage and steam bath.
Following, the therapist will apply a warm herbal paste/scrub to the body to complete the process and the paste is allowed to dry for ten minutes.
Once dry the client will take a hot shower to remove the paste and excess oil. No soap or shampoo is to be used.
It is advisable to rest a minimum of two to three hours as the Doshas will be fluctuating a great deal and unable to best support the client during this time. Recommended timings for Ayurvedic massage are 7.45am and 4pm. For morning sessions, if one must go to work, we recommend you take the morning off and only go to work after lunch and avoid any strenuous or stressful work-related activities. For afternoon sessions, we recommend that you do not return to work after the session.

The concept of Ayurvedic Therapeutic Body Massage (Abhyanga)
Whilst many treatments today put a lot of emphasis on new drugs and therapies for treating symptoms and disease in patients, Ayurveda gives priority to and prescribes measures for preventing the occurrence of such ailments.
The utility of Ayurvedic Abhyanga Body Massage as an independent and distinct therapeutic measure is well recognised because of its rejuvenating and detoxifying effect on the body and mind.
According to Vagbhata (Asthanga Hrdhayam: sutra: 2: 7-8) “… a person, with a view to preserving and promoting his positive health and preventing and curing his diseases should use massage therapy regularly”. Resorting to massage regularly is important for one desiring good health.
The primary purpose of Ayurvedic Abhyanga Body massage is to help mobilise and remove toxins within the gross and subtle bodies. The toxins (Ama) are understood to have accumulated from undigested food, from unprocessed thoughts, from negative emotions, and from stagnation within the body. The longer the Ama is retained in the subtle and physical bodies, the more difficult the toxins are to remove and the more discomfort is felt.
Ayurvedic body massage includes the application of specialised Dosha oil (warmed), continuous strokes and techniques, a full-body steam application that is followed by a herbal formula wash/scrub. The combination including the intention and awareness of the therapist provides an intense, dynamic and expansive experience.
